JOB SUMMARY:     Under general supervision, installs, maintains, repairs, and services water distribution facilities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Installs and repairs water lines and mains
  • Install new service taps
  • Join and fit pipeline and valves
  • Repair fire hydrants, valves, and individual service connections
  • Excavate and backfill trenches and culverts
  • Maintain pumps, lift stations, water towers and associated equipment
  • Maintain safe work environment through continual observance of procedures and safety awareness
  • Maintenance of city vehicles and facility by way of minor repairs and service
  • Maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior of facility by way of: mowing, weed eating, sweeping, mopping, and general upkeep.
  • On an as needed basis perform traffic control, repair street and sidewalks, notify customers of service interruptions, and collect water samples.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports concerning work progress and other reports as assigned by the foreman or superintendent
  • Subject to call back as defined in the Policy and Procedures manual
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 9 months of hire:
    •  Valid Class B Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma
    • Class "D" ODEQ Waterworks Operator certification

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental and water treatment plant regulations
  • Knowledge of biological, chemical, and mechanical principles of a water treatment plant
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures related to plant operations and grounds maintenance
  • Skill in the laboratory analysis of water samples
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a water treatment plant
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to be reached during off hours in the event of an emergency

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

  • The Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature of the final results.

GUIDELINES:

  • Guidelines include City policies and procedures and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:

  • The work consists of related construction and maintenance duties.  Inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:

  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City's water system.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically with city personnel, property owners, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:

  • Contacts are typically to resolve problems, and to provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The work is primarily performed while standing and moving about at work sites.  Requires the physical dexterity required to operate heavy equipment and enter confined areas and perform manual labor such as digging, fitting pipe and valves.  Must be able to regularly life and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently life and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move up to 100 pounds.
