Job Summary:

Supervises and coordinates workflow within the Fleet division to ensure completion of work orders and the repair of equipment.  Prepares and presents report findings to the Division Supervisor as it relates to the department’s ability to complete non-routine work orders and/or repairs.  Consults with the Division Supervisor to determine if in-house or outsourcing is appropriate for completion of non-routine work orders and/or repairs.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for determining maintenance priority, scheduling automotive work, and allocating work assignments.
  • Determines the preventive maintenance schedule of City equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs electronic fuel injection, distributor less ignition, ABS brake systems, air bag systems, A/C Heater, climate control systems, and R12 and R134a gas systems.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs electronic controlled equipment to isolate and test electronic sensors, computer systems, and onboard diagnostic equipment systems.
  • Initiates requisitions for parts as it relates to work orders and repairs.
  • Inspects parts, equipment, and vehicles to determine the cost effectiveness of repair and/or replacement.
  • Maintains records for inventory purposes.
  • Participates in continuing education and training as it relates to the latest methods and techniques of vehicle maintenance; current trends in automotive science; and use of automotive multimeter devices.
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Oklahoma Class A CDL.
  • R134A Reclaim and Recovery license in automotive air conditioning.  Must possess at time of hire.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Education:

            (Candidate must meet one (1) of the following requirements at time of employment)

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year junior college with a degree in automotive service management.
  • Completion of advanced or specialty mechanics course work accredited by automobile manufacturer or trade school, or military.
  • Four (4) years of full-time, paid employment experience as an auto/equipment mechanic with supervisory responsibilities.  
  • Possession of each of the following certifications, or the ability to obtain within stated time period:
    1. ABS Diagnostics System Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
    2. Compressed Natural Gas Alternative Fuels Technician State Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
    3. ASE Heavy Truck Technician Certification or ability to obtain within two (2) years of hire. (The City reserves the right to accept an approved equivalent.)
    4. ASE Master Auto Technician Certification or ability to obtain within two (2) years of hire. (The City reserves the right to accept an approved equivalent.)
  • Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of the function, repair, and maintenance of all types of construction, utility, refuse, and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical manuals and schematics.
  • Skill in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in the use of computers and related software programs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
